What is it?

Hepatitis B is a virus that infects the liver. Chronic infection causes cirrhosis and liver cancer years later. HK is historically a high-prevalence area.

HK launched a universal infant vaccination programme in 1988. Coverage is now 99% among pre-school children, and hepatitis B prevalence in HK residents under 35 has dropped below 1%.

The vaccine uses recombinant hepatitis B surface antigen — no live virus, no risk of infection from the shot.

International reference (US CDC)

US CDC recommends hepatitis B vaccination for all infants and for all unvaccinated adults 19-59.
