Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common respiratory virus. In older adults (60+) and infants it can cause severe RSV pneumonia, bronchiolitis, and hospitalisation.

Two RSV vaccines are now registered in HK:

  • Arexvy (GSK): recombinant protein vaccine for adults 60+
  • Abrysvo (Pfizer): recombinant protein vaccine for adults 60+ AND for use in pregnancy (32-36 weeks) to protect newborns through maternal antibodies

Both are available in the private sector. The HK Government has not yet added RSV vaccination to the public programme.

HK Department of Health has not yet issued formal SCVPD recommendations on RSV vaccination as of mid-2026.

People most likely to benefit based on international guidance and HK disease burden:

  • Adults aged 75+, especially in residential care homes
  • Adults 60-74 with chronic conditions (heart disease, COPD, diabetes, kidney disease, immunocompromise)
  • Pregnant women between 32-36 weeks (specifically Abrysvo) — to protect newborns

If you fall into one of these groups, discuss with your GP. Private cost in HK: roughly HK$1,500-2,500 per dose.

US CDC recommends RSV vaccine for adults 75+ (single dose), adults 60-74 with risk conditions, and pregnant women at 32-36 weeks (Abrysvo) as one option for protecting newborns.

Older adults: single dose. Whether revaccination is needed is still being studied.

Pregnant women (Abrysvo): single dose between 32-36 weeks of pregnancy.

Sore arm, swelling, tiredness, mild headache, muscle aches, mild fever.

A small signal of Guillain-Barré syndrome has been reported — roughly 1-3 extra cases per million doses. Regulators consider benefits to outweigh this risk for the recommended age groups.

  • Myth: RSV is a baby illness — adults don't need a vaccine for it.

Reality: RSV causes tens of thousands of adult hospitalisations annually. Older adults bear most of the burden.

  • Myth: It's a brand new vaccine — too risky.

Reality: The vaccines are recently approved, but the science is mature. Phase 3 trials covered tens of thousands of people and real-world surveillance is adding data.

  • Older adults: see your GP. Both Arexvy and Abrysvo available in the private sector.
  • Pregnant women: see your obstetrician or GP for Abrysvo at 32-36 weeks. Private cost applies.
