COVID-19 vaccines are updated as the circulating strains change, and the version Hong Kong uses now is LP.8.1.
The current vaccine
Since 1 March 2026, the government has offered the LP.8.1 mRNA COVID-19 vaccine to eligible people aged 12 or above, replacing the earlier JN.1 version. The vaccine is updated for recently circulating strains to keep protection effective.
Who should have a booster
The Scientific Committee under the Centre for Health Protection recommends a booster for priority groups, including:
- residents of care homes for the elderly
- community-dwelling adults aged 65 or above
- people aged 50 to 64 with chronic illness
- immunocompromised people aged 6 months or above
- pregnant women
- healthcare workers
When to get it
Priority groups can have a free booster at least 6 months after the last dose or last infection, whichever is later, regardless of how many doses they've had before.
Same day as the flu shot
The COVID-19 vaccine can be given at the same visit as the seasonal flu vaccine (see "Can I get the flu and COVID vaccine on the same day in Hong Kong?").
